WHERE TO START:

You can choose to cleanup various garbage files on your computer by selecting any of the buttons in the "Remove Garbage" category. The garbage files button includes many different file types, including temp files. You can use the "Fetch All" button to perform an automatic cleanup of garbage files, 0 byte files, cached webpages, and cached pictures. If any of these file types are found, a window will open, telling you the total space wasted and the number of each file type found. You can then select which file type to have cleanup up, or simply don't select any file type to see a list of the found files. You can then select the individual files to be permanently removed or added to the trash bin.

You can also choose any of the buttons under category box "View or Examine" to get a list of all the found files. These are commonly found files that you can search through and view, then determine if you would like to remove each file. Many of these will be forgotten text documents, downloaded pictures or videos, or various other files which you should be able to recognize, then determine whether to keep it or add it to the trash bin. You can conveniently view the file statistics and view the file data by simply highlighting the file and clicking the corresponding button. Options are also available for sorting the file list various different ways.

WHY USE THIS SOFTWARE?

This software will help keep your entire system clean of the excess garbage which accumulates over time, keeping your system at peak performance and reclaiming your extra hard drive space. Many of these files continually get recreated and leftover by Windows, but regular use of this software will allow you to keep things cleaned up. This not only searches and finds various files left behind by Windows, but also searches for many other space consuming files that may have been left behind from internet downloads or program installations. You can automatically cleanup all garbage files, 0 byte files, and previously viewed webpages and pictures. Garbage files include many different file types, including temp files. You can also examine zip files, sound files, pictures, multimedia files, text documents, screensavers, and even "ini" files. These are all often forgotten about after downloading or installing, and this gives you the opportunity to find, sort, and examine these files. Simply select a drive then click the corresponding button to create a list. This contains a built in video player, sound player, and graphics viewer, so you can immediately view all the files without opening another software application. You can even preview screensavers with the click of a button. Please view the "Help FAQ" below, which may help explain the many different functions of this software. What is the "trash bin"?

The "PC Garbage Remover" contains a user friendly trash bin for those who do not like the "Recycle Bin" used by Windows95. You can choose to permanently delete any files, or you can choose to delete it to the trash bin. Deleting to the "trash bin" will remove the file, but store it in a separate location called the "Trash Bin". This will allow you to restore the file to its original location by simply clicking a button. Once you feel comfortable that you will never need the file again, you can remove it permanently by deleting it from the "trash bin" at a later date.

What files does "Fetch All" find?

This button will combine all of the file types listed in the category box "Remove Garbage". This simply provides a convenient way to select all of these file types without clicking 4 different buttons.

Why does the "automatic cleanup" window open for some file types, but not all of them?

If you are selecting files under the "Remove Garbage" category, these are file types which can be safely removed by this software. The other file types listed under the "View or Examine" boxes are files which you should view to determine whether or not it should be kept. These file types can be identified, usually by the text within them or by the file name. You may recognize old documents you have worked on (and forgotten about, but no longer need), old file installations you have tried, or even old screensavers which came pre-installed but you never plan on using.

What does the "Show Totals" button tell me?

This button will tell you some of your system statistics. First, it will tell you the number of files deleted and bytes of space reclaimed with the "PC Garbage Remover" software. (If you are using the trial version, these totals will show zero because the delete buttons are only available with the registered version). These totals are reset for you when you exit the software, then they will begin accumulating again when you run the software. The RAM memory check will tell you the total RAM on your system, the number of bytes currently available for use, and the percentage currently available for use. Even if you have all applications closed, the amount available will not be 100% because Windows uses alot of RAM. The swap file check will tell you the total swap file size on your system, the number of bytes currently available for use, and the percentage currently available for use.

When I click the "Show Totals" button, the RAM and swap file information is constantly changing. Why?

This is normal to see it change slightly, even if you haven't done anything on your system.

Can I run this against more than one drive?

Yes. Just select any drive in the selection box listed near the bottom. This will also work on multiple lan drives.

Can I delete multiple items at once?

Yes. Hold the shift key down, and use your mouse or arrow keys to select a block of files, then click "Delete". You can also hold down the ctrl key and use your mouse to select items which are not "blocked" together. If adding to the trash bin, see next message.

Can I add multiple items at once to the trash bin?

Although you can delete multiple items at once, you cannot add multiple items to the trash bin all at once. The trash bin is designed to let you find and restore files if necessary, and if you add files to the bin in large quantities, it would be very difficult determining which file you need to restore, if this situation is necessary. It is recommended that you add items to the bin in small quantities, and if you are sure that you want to permanently remove many files at once, then you should use the delete button.

When I select "Default Viewer", nothing happens. Why?

One of the nice features of Windows 95 is that you can set up "default viewers" depending upon the file extension. For example, this allows you to view animated gifs by opening the "default viewer" for "gif" which is normally your web browser. If nothing opens, then you do not have a default viewer setup for that file extension, but usually this is automatically setup when you installed your browser (or other applications). If you need to define a default viewer on your system, see next message.

How do I setup my system so it has a "default viewer" for a file extension?

Open windows explorer and find a file with the extension that you would like to define the default viewer. Click once to highlight that file, then hold down the Shift key and right-click on the file. Choose "Open With" from the pop-up menu, scroll through the list of programs and choose the application. Be sure to check the box labeled "Always use this program to open this type of file" before you click on OK. Now your default viewer is setup as the application you have selected!

Sometimes when I click a file in the listbox, I get a message that says "Invalid argument to date encode".

This simply means that the file didn't have an associated date. The "PC Garbage Remover" will conveniently display the file date and bytes everytime you select a file, and if this date is not there, this message will appear.

Some files do not open when I click "View File".

This happens on some zero byte files with no extension. If this happens, click the "show details" button, and you will see that the byte size is zero, so there really isn't anything to see.

When trying to delete a file, or delete a file to the trash bin, I get an error message?

Chances are good that the file is in use by another application, and is therefore locked. You should verify all applications are closed, and that the file is not "in use", then try it again.
